In-Kyung Kim Wins Longs Drugs Challenge, Makes Mom Proud

Date October 14, 2008

, the second-year Tour member, won the last Sunday, shooting 10-under 278 to defeat Angela Stanford by three strokes. Kim earned $180,000 and increased her yearly earnings to about $850,000. The cool thing, however, was Kim’s closing remarks about her parents, especially her mother.

In response to the question: “Your mom is here with you. Does she, or your dad, travel with you a lot?”, Kim said In broken English and without a translator:

“Actually, my dad always traveled with me when I was younger when I was in Korea. But my mom, it’s great I can share a room and have dinner and have chat with my mom. It’s a great thing. She doesn’t really talk about golf all the time because she doesn’t know about it like other parents.

“But she always supports me and believes in me more than I believe myself. I think that’s why I can be here today. Believing in me more than I believe myself.”

That’s what we parents do, believe in our kids, encourage them, and burst with pride when they achieve their goals. It’s great to know some things are the same even in Asia, eh?
