Jeff Sluman Claims Pebble Beach Win (Finally) At Walmart First Tee Open
September 2, 2008
It’s arguably the world’s most famous golf course and Jeff Sluman, like many veteran pros, has played Pebble Beach Golf Links more than 100 times.
Sluman, a Champions Tour rookie, had the successful but dubious distinction of finishing second twice on the picturesque layout in the same year — in the 1992 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the U.S. Open.
But the runner-up finishes ended Sunday when Sluman cruised to a five-stroke win in the fifth annual Walmart First Tee Open.
Sluman emerged from a four-way tie after 36 holes with a 5-under 67 to defeat Fuzzy Zoeller and Craig Stadler.
A six-time PGA Tour winner who in June claimed his first Champions Tour title at the Bank of America Championship, finished at 14-under 202 after a six-birdie, one-bogey round.
“I’m happy to finally be playing the kind of golf I knew I could play out here,” said Sluman, who earned $315,000 of the tournament’s $2.1 million purse “It’s been a struggle, but I’m glad to be feeling comfortable.”
Sluman also had unique company for some of his final round as well as post-round festivities. His friend Bill Murray, the comedian and actor, who didn’t make the cut, often provided his well-known antics during the final round.
